HSR reduced people’s travel times to less than 2 hours, boosted the local economy surrounding the major railway station areas and largely strengthened the technology of related industries. However, nobody argued about the feasibility of HSR anymore after the HSR was completed, because the HSR has largely improved Korean people’s quality of life. Some said that we should scrap HSR and save costs by building new highways instead, and some suggested that we should just expand the existing railways. Korea also faced many political debates during the initial stage of HSR project and opposition voices rose too, mainly among the NGOs. Compared to Korea which launched the HSR project in 1992, it is hard to say that Malaysia is not prepared for this project looking at its social-economic foundation. From my point of view, I think the construction of HSR is very timely for Malaysia to achieve Vision 2020 and I believe Malaysia will definitely benefit from this investment. Of course, there can be different views about the method and timing of the investment. Investment in transport infrastructure is very important as it serves as a country’s long-term growth driver. Do you think this mega-sized project is really needed? Jurong Town Hall station will serve International Business Park, and Pandan Reservoir station will cater for residents around Teban Gardens and West Coast Road, places of worship and the Commonwealth Secondary School located next to the station.#1 Some people are opposed to the construction of KL-SG HSR. The new Toh Guan station will serve existing communities along Jurong East Central, places of worship and schools. JRL will put 60,000 more households in Jurong within a 10-minute walk of a train station, LTA said. LTA wants optimum connectivity among the main Jurong nodes, such as the Jurong Industrial Estate, Jurong Innovation District, and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU). JRL is Singapore’s seventh MRT line and is intended to support the Jurong area, which is set to be the largest commercial hub outside the Central Business District. LTA aims for it to be operational in 2028. The JRL is a 24km elevated MRT line that will connect Singapore’s north-western and western areas. Work is expected to start later this year, the LTA said.ĭaewoo is currently building Stevens station on another MRT line in Singapore, the Thomson-East Coast Line. The joint venture will build Toh Guan, Jurong Town Hall and Pandan Reservoir stations, as well as viaducts spanning 3.6km, Singapore’s Land Transport Authority, which is in charge of the JRL, said. South Korea’s Daewoo Engineering & Construction has won a senior role on a major transport infrastructure programme in Singapore, which sees it designing and building three mass rapid transit (MRT) stations for the planned Jurong Region Line (JRL).ĭaewoo takes a 60% share in the US$227m contract, to be shared with local firm Yongnam Engineering & Construction.
